Lusaka, August 12, 2024 – The Socialist Party (SP) women have expressed serious concerns over what they describe as the UPND Government’s increasing tendency to oppress political opponents. The issue came to the forefront following a visit by an SP women delegation, led by Mrs. Mutinta Mazoka M’membe, to the Kabwata Police Station where NDC President Saboi Imboela is currently detained.

Olivia Phiri, SP’s National Resource Mobilisation Chairperson, conveyed the party’s dismay at the current political climate, labeling it as a troubling development for the country. Phiri emphasized that such inhumane treatment of political leaders should not be tolerated and called for change in the upcoming 2026 elections.

Phiri noted, “It is disheartening to witness the extent to which political opponents are being suppressed. The UPND Government’s actions are both unacceptable and concerning. Despite these challenges, we remain resilient and are growing stronger. Our resolve is unshaken.”

During the visit, Phiri observed that Saboi Imboela was in high spirits despite her detention. She expressed empathy towards Imboela, particularly acknowledging the difficulties faced by female political detainees.

Phiri urged Zambians to reflect on the current regime’s approach and to take action to remove what she termed an oppressive government. “The kind of regime we have now is one that seeks to silence dissent and stifle political freedom. We must stand united and ensure that such oppressive practices are ended,” Phiri concluded.

The Socialist Party’s stance highlights ongoing tensions and raises questions about political freedoms and human rights under the current administration. The call for change reflects broader concerns about the state of democracy and governance in Zambia.
