Zambian Police Under Scrutiny After Brutality at Dandy Krazy’s Funeral

Police Brutality Mars Funeral of Zambian Music Legend Dandy Krazy

The funeral of Zambia’s beloved musician, Wesley Chibambo, known by his stage name Dandy Krazy, was marred by disturbing reports of police brutality, casting a shadow over the final send-off at Lusaka’s Showgrounds.

The ceremony, which attracted thousands of mourners, was tainted by multiple accounts of police harassment and violent behavior. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of at least five police officers physically accosted several mourners, including a worker from the Agriculture and Commercial Show Society of Zambia. The worker was allegedly assaulted, his phone seized, and he was subjected to verbal abuse in a tense and volatile environment.

Other mourners who tried to enter the venue were also met with aggression, with officers reportedly shouting insults, creating an atmosphere of fear and discomfort. These incidents occurred despite previous public statements from Zambia’s Inspector General of Police, Graphael Musamba, who had acknowledged the unprofessional behavior of some officers and vowed to take action against rogue elements within the force.

The unfortunate events followed the tragic death of Dandy Krazy, who passed away from injuries sustained in a road traffic accident on New Year’s Day along the Great North Road. Though he survived the initial collision, Dandy Krazy succumbed to his injuries at the University Teaching Hospital. The accident claimed the lives of four other individuals, including the artist’s driver, dancer, and backing vocalist. His passing was a great loss to Zambia’s music industry, with tributes pouring in from fans and fellow artists.

Despite the violence at the funeral, the Showgrounds were packed with mourners who came to honor the man behind the iconic hit “Chintelelwe.” The ceremony was marked by an artistic tribute that highlighted Dandy Krazy’s immense contribution to Zambian music. His body was eventually laid to rest at the Leopards Hill Memorial Park, accompanied by heartfelt speeches and performances celebrating his legacy.

Meanwhile, Elvis Nkandu, Zambia’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Arts, made it clear that the government would not publicly disclose the support it has offered to Dandy Krazy’s family. Speaking at the funeral, Nkandu stated that announcing the government’s contributions would be “tantamount to showing off,” emphasizing that the government’s role was to discreetly assist those in mourning. He also warned against the use of social media to highlight charitable donations, reminding the public that giving should be done without seeking attention.

Nkandu’s comments on the matter reflected a larger debate around privacy and public acts of charity. “We as government will not show off. We are going to do the needful,” he added, highlighting that discussions about support had already taken place with Dandy Krazy’s widow and fellow artist B Flow, who witnessed the arrangements.

The tragic events surrounding Dandy Krazy’s funeral have raised serious questions about police conduct and the treatment of mourners at public events. With calls for greater accountability and respect for citizens’ rights, the question remains whether the authorities will take meaningful steps to address the issue of police brutality, ensuring that future public gatherings are safe and respectful.
