The body of Constable Kapenda Peter, stationed at Sibanyati Basic School, was discovered near Muchena Moyo Farm, about one kilometer from his workplace.
The discovery was made by Constable Chisi Mwanje, a colleague of the deceased, who, along with Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) member Collen Chijata, rushed to the scene after receiving information about a body found in a bush. Upon their arrival, they found Constable Kapenda dead with gunshot wounds that had entered through his mouth and exited the back of his head.

Southern Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, confirmed the incident, stating that an AK-47 rifle with 26 rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene. Three spent cartridges were also found, suggesting that the shots were fired in rapid succession. The body of the deceased was discovered half-dressed, wearing only grey trousers, without a shirt or shoes.
Constable Kapenda was last seen by his colleague, Constable Mwanje, on January 9, 2025, when he left their shared accommodation at Sibanyati Basic School to attend a funeral. When Mwanje returned early on January 10, he found that his colleague was missing, along with an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition. Attempts to contact Constable Kapenda by phone went unanswered, and hours later, he was found dead.
Police confirmed that the officer’s death is being treated as suspicious, and investigations have been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. The body has been transported to Choma General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Deputy Commissioner Namalongo assured the public that thorough investigations are underway. Authorities have appealed for patience as they work to determine the exact details of what led to this tragic event.
This latest development in Southern Province has left the community and police force shaken, with many eager to learn more about the circumstances behind Constable Kapenda’s untimely death.
