In a stunning twist in Zambian politics, several Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Patriotic Front (PF), alongside independent MPs from Eastern Province, have thrown their support behind the UPND candidate, Mr. Severian Lungu, for the upcoming Petauke Central by-election. This surprising move has left many questioning the real motivations behind it and the broader political dynamics unfolding in Eastern Province.
The Petauke by-election, while seemingly routine, carries a deeper, more contentious undertone. According to political analyst Chishala Chilufya, the event was not just about filling a vacant seat, but rather a product of bitterness, political revenge, and a series of controversial actions that challenge the very fabric of Zambia’s democratic and Christian values. These actions, Chilufya argues, reflect broader issues within Zambia’s political system, particularly the troubling tendency of politicians to shift allegiances for personal gain.
What is particularly noteworthy about this situation is the dramatic shift in loyalty by several MPs who were once strong allies of Hon. Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda. Many of these MPs were once staunch supporters of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, so much so that some even named their children after him. Today, however, they openly criticize the same leader they once held in high regard. This sudden shift raises questions: Is it a matter of fear, betrayal, or simply political opportunism?
Chilufya highlights that this scenario is not entirely new in Zambian politics. In the 2011 elections, several PF MPs from Luapula Province defected to the MMD, even standing on its ticket. However, they failed to win, and most of them vanished from the political scene altogether. This history of shifting allegiances, according to Chilufya, speaks to a deeper issue within Zambia’s political culture: a lack of loyalty and principles.
The situation in Eastern Province is particularly concerning, as it has historically struggled with political unity. In both the 2011 and 2021 elections, the province’s divided political stance played a crucial role in determining the outcome of national elections. In 2011, despite having about 700,000 registered voters, only 220,000 voted for the late President Rupiah Banda, resulting in a loss by 115,000 votes. Fast forward to 2021, and the difference between President Edgar Lungu and President Hakainde Hichilema’s votes in Eastern Province was a mere 32,000 votes. This continuous political division is seen as a major obstacle to the province’s success and stability.
On the other hand, Chilufya points to the example set by Southern Province, which has remained politically united and disciplined. In Southern Province, politicians and the electorate show steadfast loyalty, focus, and a commitment to self-reliance. These qualities have contributed to the province’s political success, contrasting sharply with the ongoing divisions in Eastern Province.
As for the MPs endorsing Mr. Lungu, the question remains: Is this a genuine shift in political strategy, or is it simply a case of opportunism and betrayal? While the answers remain unclear, the situation in Eastern Province serves as a critical reminder that political unity and loyalty are crucial for the stability and growth of any region.
For the people and leaders of Eastern Province, this moment offers an opportunity for reflection. The province must come together and prioritize unity over division if it is to achieve meaningful progress. Without unity, the region risks remaining vulnerable to political manipulation, and Zambia’s overall development will remain hindered.
