Mwamba vs. Zambia Police: The Truth Behind the Asylum Allegations.

On January 31, 2025, Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba made a passionate statement. The prominent Zambian politician and activist condemned the threats against his life. He is concerned for his personal safety ahead of his planned return to Zambia. Mwamba has been in the United States for official duties. He insists on returning home despite ongoing harassment. He faces multiple threats from the Zambia Police and some political figures.

Mwamba’s statement comes after he submitted a report. He submitted it to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan. In this report, he cited human rights abuses by the Zambia Police. These abuses include assault, torture, and malicious prosecution. Various international human rights organizations have documented these actions. They include Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the US Country Report. This documentation makes Mwamba’s claims well-documented in the global fight for human rights.

The Zambia Police have recently responded to Mwamba’s report. They claim that he intends to seek asylum in the United States. They alleged that his reports were aimed at eliciting responses from law enforcement to build a case for political asylum. Mwamba firmly denies this accusation. He stresses that his actions are motivated by his wish to create positive change in Zambia’s political landscape.

In his statement, Mwamba emphasizes his commitment to return to Zambia this week. He remains determined despite continued threats of arrest and potential violence. He accuses the government and law enforcement of trying to exile him. They try this either through false charges or worse, by inciting violence against him. His remarks follow reports. These reports state that several senior members of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) suggested violence against him. They reportedly called for his life to be taken.

Mwamba highlights that the Zambia Police have not taken action against those issuing death threats publicly against him. This situation strengthens his claim that his life is in danger. The politician fears that the government want to remove him from the political stage before Zambia’s 2026 general elections. This may happen through imprisonment or worse.

“I’ve paid my nomination fees for the Patriotic Front primary elections. I have suffered brutality, harassment, and arrest for my beliefs. “I will not be intimidated into silence,” Mwamba stated. He added that he has been subjected to political violence and oppressive actions since joining politics in 2022.

While Mwamba maintains that he was in the U.S. for official work, he is resolute about returning to Zambia, despite the threats against him. His statement strongly defies political and law enforcement oppression. He reaffirms his dedication to the country’s development and democratic process.
