August 12, 2024
Fellow Citizens,
Today, August 12th, marks three years since Zambians from all walks of life cast their votes to usher in the new dawn government led by President Hakainde Hichilema. As I reflect on this milestone, I am reminded of the transition of power I gracefully undertook as a true democrat.
Looking back, I take pride in the legacy my PF government left behind. Despite the numerous challenges we faced, we managed to maintain a relatively stable cost of living and moderate prices for essential commodities compared to the current state of affairs.
When I handed over power in August 2021, the price of a 25 kg bag of mealie meal ranged from K90 to K120. Today, this same bag costs between K340 and K460, with fuel prices rising from K17 to an unstable K33.47. Similarly, a 50 kg bag of fertilizer which was K600 now costs K1,200, and the price of a 2 kg package of sugar has surged from K45 to over K75. These price increases reflect a broader trend of rising costs for essential goods.
I have observed with concern that many essential commodities are now being sold in smaller quantities, a sign that ordinary Zambians are struggling to afford standard package sizes. This trend is troubling and indicative of the hardships faced by our citizens.
It pains me to know that many Zambians are now unable to afford three meals a day, a luxury that was more accessible during my administration thanks to bumper harvests and food security measures. This year, over 6 million Zambians are at risk of starvation, a stark contrast to the relative stability we aimed to provide.
In terms of energy, my administration made significant strides in addressing load shedding and ensuring energy security for both households and industries. Regrettably, we now witness the worst electricity crisis in our nation’s history. Additionally, our mining sector, a critical part of our economy, is experiencing diminished benefits compared to three years ago.
Globally, effective governance advocates for stable economic growth, inclusive development, and affordability for all citizens. Unfortunately, the current administration appears to be perpetuating poverty, economic inequality, and hardship for the Zambian people. This is deeply concerning.
On this day, I urge all Zambians to reflect honestly on our progress since August 2021. It is essential that we strive to restore inclusive democratic rule, good governance, pro-poor policies, respect for human rights, and support for the basic needs of our people in a legitimate and democratic manner.
Thank you, and may God continue to bless and protect Zambia.
