How CDF is Transforming Zambia’s Education: Mansa District Commissioner Explains

The Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is making a significant impact on Zambia’s education sector, with Mansa District Commissioner Ireen Chivweta highlighting the positive changes it has brought to the region. In an exclusive interview with ZANIS, Ms. Chivweta praised the government’s efforts to improve education infrastructure, noting that several schools have been built in Mansa District and nationwide, leading to improved access to quality education for learners.

Since the implementation of CDF in 2022, Ms. Chivweta noted that the construction of new school buildings has encouraged many children to attend school, ensuring that they receive a better quality of education. She emphasized that without these new schools built with CDF resources, many children would likely face significant barriers to education.

“I thank the Head of State for spearheading development in the education sector. Without schools which we are building through CDF, many children could have been suffering, and others could have stopped attending school. However, through CDF, our children are now going to school, and they will surely learn,” Ms. Chivweta said.

In addition to new classrooms, Ms. Chivweta highlighted the emphasis placed on providing essential facilities such as ablution blocks with flushable toilets and running water in every school built through CDF. She pointed to the newly opened Donald Chushi Primary School as an exemplary model, equipped with flushable toilets, a solar-powered water reticulation system, and even a staff house.

“This is what CDF is for, and we will continue to do so,” she added, stressing that the availability of these amenities creates a conducive environment for learning and teaching. The inclusion of such facilities also reflects the government’s commitment to improving the overall education experience for students and teachers.

Ms. Chivweta also urged school administrators to protect the newly built infrastructure, stressing the importance of maintenance and keeping the surroundings clean. She noted that the continued success of the CDF program depends on the community’s involvement in caring for the schools and ensuring that facilities remain in good condition.

“For instance, Mansa Secondary School was built years ago and is still standing today. We want the same for the new schools under CDF – they should be well-maintained and free from vandalism,” Ms. Chivweta said.

Additionally, Ms. Chivweta addressed the need for desks in schools across Zambia, noting that the government is committed to ensuring that no child is forced to sit on the floor during their lessons. She confirmed that efforts are underway to provide desks to all schools, including those that were not built with CDF funds, ensuring that all learners have a dignified learning experience.
