In a strong rebuke of former President Edgar Lungu’s recent statements, Trevor Mwiinde, Deputy National Youth Chairman for Politics and Mobilization of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), has urged civil servants and police officers to disregard Lungu’s threatening remarks.
Mwiinde condemned Lungu’s comments, which included threats to ‘follow and sort out’ individuals who do not support him, describing them as reckless and intimidating. He dismissed these threats as a mere “storm in a tea cup” and emphasized that such language has no place in Zambia’s modern democracy.
“Lungu’s tactics of intimidation are reminiscent of the dictatorial tendencies that Zambians overwhelmingly rejected in the 2021 elections,” Mwiinde stated. “We will not tolerate attempts to bully our dedicated civil servants and law enforcement officers.”
Mwiinde reaffirmed the UPND’s commitment to a merit-based, professional public service free from political interference. He urged all public servants to remain steadfast in their duty to serve the Zambian people, rather than succumbing to political coercion.
Highlighting President Hakainde Hichilema’s dedication to the nation, Mwiinde called on civil servants and the police to remain loyal to Hichilema, whose leadership prioritizes the well-being of all Zambians. “President Hichilema’s commitment to Zambia’s progress and integrity stands in stark contrast to the divisive rhetoric of the past,” Mwiinde concluded.
The UPND remains committed to fostering a respectful and professional public service environment, and Mwiinde’s statements serve as a clear reminder of the party’s stance against any form of political intimidation.
