LUSAKA — Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has called on the church to intervene and counsel former President Edgar Lungu after his recent comments about civil servants stirred controversy.
Lungu, speaking in Chinsali last Saturday, warned that if he returns to power in 2026, he would pursue and deal with civil servants he deems to be engaging in misconduct. His statement has been criticized for its threatening tone, prompting a response from Kawana.
In a press briefing held today in Lusaka, Kawana condemned Lungu’s remarks as “shameful” and inappropriate for a former head of state. He urged religious leaders to take action before Lungu makes further public statements. “It’s about time the church sat our former president down and provided him with counsel before he is given another platform to potentially incite conflict,” Kawana said.
Kawana emphasized that civil servants should disregard Lungu’s threats and continue performing their duties with integrity. He reassured them that President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration stands firm on legal and professional conduct, making it clear that those who violate the law will face consequences on their own.
The Permanent Secretary also addressed the issue of misinformation on social media, warning that efforts to curb false information will soon be intensified.
