Dozens survive Choma train accident

OVER 280 people have survived a traffic accident involving a train and truck which happened at Kozo Lodge rail crossing in Choma yesterday.

This was after a Scania truck and trailer laden with floor tiles heading to South Africa was hit by a passenger train after a 29-year-old Zimbabwean driver failed to obey traffic signs or signal of mandatory stop at a rail crossing.

The passenger train number 202 on locomotive number 270 was being driven by Savior Mwansabamba, 38, of Livingstone’s Dambwa North Extension and had 282 passengers on board.

Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka identified the driver of the truck and trailer registration CY 236-700, CY 458-491, and CY 458-495 as Walter Gudo, of house number 2283, Blockdale Bundura, Zimbabwe.

Mr Daka said the accident happened at about 06:00 hours on the Choma-Livingstone road, seven kilometres from Choma town.

“Due to the impact, the locomotive engine, rail track, and generator set coach were damaged while the horse and trailers of the truck were also damaged,” he said.

A check by the Zambia Daily Mail around 08:30 hours found train passengers stranded waiting to be updated on the next course of action.
