M’membe thanks Archbishop Banda for communion in police custody

Socialist Party – SP Leader Dr. Fred M’membe, a devout Catholic for 65 years, gave the Most Rev. Dr. Alick Banda to the Lusaka Metropolitan Archbishop for his heartfelt thanks for receiving Holy Communion at the Twin Palms Police Station in Lusaka where he has been detained for the past four days.
Dr. M’membe said he was deeply moved by the bishop’s respect and devotion to the Eucharist.
He said the close care with which Bishop Banda brings Christ in the Eucharist really moves him and strengthens his faith every time he receives it.
The SP President expressed his gratitude to the bishop for his faithful service and for being a vessel for him to encounter the Lord in such a profound way.
Police spokesperson Ray Hamunga on Thursday announced that the Zambia police had arrested 65-year-old Dr. Hamunga. Fred Mmembe was arrested and formally charged with sedition. He said the offence is in violation of Section 60(I)©️ read with Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, Penal Code, Section 60(I)(b).

Dr. Hamunga explained that Mmembe allegedly posted an article entitled “Tshisekedi informs Catholic Bishops of DRC of $20 million payment to ‘buy Zambia’s silence’” on 16 July 2024 between 1pm and 2pm.

He said the contents of the article were allegedly intended to incite hatred or contempt or incite discontent against the government as provided by law.

Dr. Mmembe is in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges.
