Saboi Imboela, President of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has defended President Edgar Lungu’s recent comments made at a rally in Samfya, dismissing criticisms from UPND ministers as unwarranted drama.
During the Citizen’s First/UKA rally, President Lungu stated that civil servants engaging in misconduct would face repercussions when there is a change in government in 2026. This statement has drawn criticism from UPND officials, including Ministers Jack Mwiimbu and Cornelius Mweetwa, who have been described by Imboela as competing for the title of “biggest drama king” in the ruling party.
Imboela argues that Lungu’s remarks are consistent with the actions of past leaders, including President Hakainde Hichilema (HH), who also addressed the issue of politically influenced civil servants when he was in opposition. Imboela emphasizes that Lungu’s comments reflect a broader reality of Zambian politics where civil servants who engage in politically motivated actions often face consequences once there is a change in leadership.
According to Imboela, the criticism of Lungu’s statement ignores the challenges faced by the opposition due to biased civil servants and politically influenced law enforcement. She stresses that civil servants should maintain neutrality and serve all citizens impartially, regardless of their political affiliations.
Imboela points out that under both President Michael Sata and Hichilema, politically exposed civil servants faced dismissal, a trend she argues is a necessary response to ensure a professional and unbiased public service. She calls for all civil servants to adhere to their duties with neutrality to support the country’s development.
