A Solwezi resident has appealed to government to come up with interventions to help reduce the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in order to reduce the dependency on charcoal as an alternative source of energy.

Abel Chalwe said the price of gas is high making it difficult for people to purchase it.

Mr Chalwe told ZANIS in an interview today that gas is an alternative source of energy which people should be using but the high prices is making them go back to using charcoal.

” We want to help reduce deforestation by not using charcoal for cooking but gas is becoming pricey,” he observed.

Mr Chalwe said the fight against climate change needs concerted effort adding that the cutting down of trees for charcoal production will not help solve the solution.

He added that the use of gas as a source of energy is the only way out as there is a need to reduce the prices to encourage more people to use gas.

” I have been using gas to cook for years now but with the coming of load shedding, the demand is high and prices have gone up,” he noted

Mr Chalwe empathised the need for the Ministry of Energy to quickly find ways of helping reduce the prices.

We understand that with the drought we are facing we can’t depend on electricity but we need to find ways of making alternative sources of energy affordable for an ordinary Zambian.
