In a bold statement, Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, Honourable Elvis Nkandu, has called for the dissolution of the Copper Queens’ technical bench, including head coach Bruce Mwape, following their disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Nkandu’s criticism was triggered by Zambia’s dramatic 6-5 loss to Australia after holding a 5-2 lead. The Minister expressed frustration over the team’s inability to maintain their advantage and emphasized the need for a change in leadership.

During a press conference at the New Government Complex on Monday morning, Nkandu argued that while Zambia has individual talent, the lack of effective coaching was evident. He noted, “In Zambia, we have individual brilliance, but we lack the right people to mold this talent. We could have managed the game better, like Brazil did against Spain.”

Nkandu highlighted that the government’s role should increase once the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) signs the long-awaited MOU with the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), which will make the NSCZ responsible for funding the Copper Queens’ coach. He stressed that although the government does not have the authority to choose or fire coaches, it should have a say in the process given its financial contribution.

The Copper Queens’ performance at the Olympics was marked by a series of losses: a 3-0 defeat to the USA, a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Australia, and a final 4-1 defeat to Germany, which led to their elimination from the tournament without a win.

Looking ahead, the Copper Queens will aim to redeem themselves at the Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco.
