On August 12, 2024, as the New Dawn Administration reflected on its three years in office, Mr. Edgar Lungu published an extensive critique of the current challenges facing Zambia. He attributed these issues to the UPND administration, contrasting them with the conditions during his own presidency.
However, Mr. Lungu’s critique appears to lack depth and relevance. Although he returned to active politics with aspirations to regain the presidency, his motivations—whether to serve Zambia or prioritize his family and friends—remain unclear.
The core issue with Mr. Lungu’s arguments is his failure to address the reasons for his previous electoral defeat in 2021. His commentary often sidesteps the real reasons why voters rejected his administration in favor of the UPND. He avoids discussing how he plans to tackle the corruption that was prevalent during his tenure. Will he permit an investigation into the wealth accumulated by his family and associates?
Furthermore, Mr. Lungu does not address the violence and brutality that marked his administration. He does not offer solutions for dealing with political violence or addressing the criminal activities associated with his regime. Zambians are left wondering whether his return would mean a revival of his controversial practices.
Mr. Lungu’s current focus on the high cost of living, load shedding, and commodity prices is not new information to the public. The Zambians are acutely aware of these problems and are seeking actionable solutions rather than repetitive criticism. For instance, the New Dawn Administration is actively working on solutions like promoting enhanced agriculture, offering incentives, and launching new energy projects to address these issues. Mr. Lungu’s failure to provide alternative strategies or solutions to these problems is glaring.
The New Dawn Administration has also been making strides in expanding energy resources and addressing power shortages. As you read this, the President may be inaugurating new energy projects like the expanded Maamba Collieries plant or promoting solar initiatives. While the impact of these measures may take time to become visible, they represent a proactive approach to solving energy issues.
Zambians need to hear how Mr. Lungu plans to address these pressing issues differently from the current administration. Simply highlighting existing problems without offering viable solutions is akin to reminding someone of their pain without providing a remedy.
Mr. Lungu’s approach seems to imply that his return to power would primarily benefit himself and his allies rather than address the needs of the Zambian people. This perception could further alienate voters who are still dealing with the aftermath of his previous administration.
In summary, Mr. Lungu’s critique falls short in offering credible solutions to the problems he highlights. For Zambians to consider his return, he must present a clear plan on how he will address the issues that led to his previous ousting, including tackling corruption and political violence.
