“Zambia in Crisis: ZAWAPA President Slams UPND’s ‘Betrayal’ Over Precious Minerals Export Duty Ban”

Ndola, Zambia – 19 February 2025 – In a fiery press statement, Zambia Wake-Up Party (ZAWAPA) President Hon. Howard has condemned the UPND government’s controversial decision. The government plans to abolish export duties on precious minerals. Howard called it a “reckless betrayal of Zambia’s future.” The move was announced this week. It has ignited nationwide outrage. Critics accuse the UPND of prioritizing foreign mining giants over Zambian citizens.

“This policy is economic suicide,” declared Hon. Howard, addressing supporters in Ndola. The UPND is taking away export duties on gems like emeralds, amethysts, and gold. As a result, they are robbing Zambia of billions in revenue. This revenue is meant for hospitals, schools, and roads. How will they fund our teachers? How will farmers survive?”

5 Reasons Zambia’s Mineral Ban Sparks National Fury

  1. Stolen Revenue, Stolen Future
Export duties historically fund critical infrastructure. With their removal, Zambia loses billions in Kwacha annually—money vital for healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.
  2. Colonial Exploitation Reloaded
Critics argue the UPND is reviving a “dig-and-ship” colonial model. Foreign firms extract raw minerals while Zambia misses out on value addition, factories, and youth jobs.
  3. Environmental Catastrophe Looms
Without export duty regulations, illegal mining is predicted to surge, poisoning rivers, destroying ecosystems, and displacing communities.
  4. Foreign Profits Over Zambian Lives
Mining cartels will repatriate profits overseas, leaving Zambia poorer. Hon. Howard slammed the UPND: “Who do you serve—Zambians or foreign shareholders?”
  5. Race to the Bottom
Scrapping duties sets a dangerous precedent, pressuring neighboring nations to undercut prices. “Our minerals are not a fire sale—they belong to future Zambians!” Howard vowed.

ZAWAPA’s Call to Action

The opposition party demands immediate policy reversal and urges citizens to resist what it calls “daylight robbery.” Key questions remain unanswered:

  • Why prioritize foreign interests over Zambian sovereignty?
  • Where is transparency in mining contracts?
  • Where is the UPND’s pledge to industrialization?

“A Zambia for Zambians—No Retreat, No Surrender!” Howard declared, mobilizing legal and democratic challenges to hold the UPND accountable.
