By Kalemba, February 10, 2025

In a bold and strategic move, the Zambian government has set an ambitious target. They aim to produce 10 million metric tonnes of maize by 2027. Additionally, they plan to produce 1 million metric tonnes each of wheat and soybeans. This groundbreaking initiative is part of the nation’s comprehensive strategy. It aims to boost agricultural productivity. It also ensures sustainable development across the agricultural sector.

During a two-day benchmarking exercise in Pretoria, South Africa, Ministry of Agriculture Director Dr. Chizumba Shephande reaffirmed the government’s commitment to these lofty production goals. “The full implementation of the Comprehensive Agricultural Transformation Support Programme (CATSP) is critical,” Dr. Shephande stated. “CATSP will be instrumental in not only meeting our production targets but also in exceeding them. This will foster a more resilient and sustainable agricultural landscape in Zambia.”

Jones Simbela is the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) Delivery Manager for Efficient Value Chains. He explained that the benchmarking exercise was designed to incorporate regional best practices. It also aims to integrate innovations. “We can enhance the effective execution of CATSP by learning from successful agricultural models in South Africa. This approach will drive our transformation agenda,” he added.

A statement from the Zambia High Commission was issued by First Secretary, Press and Public Relations Tamara Nyirenda. It further emphasized that the benchmarking exercise is a vital step toward achieving Zambia’s long-term agricultural objectives. The initiative underscores the government’s determination to meet the set targets. It also aims to secure the nation’s future in food security and economic growth.

This strategic drive aims to produce 10 million tonnes of maize. It is complemented by significant outputs in wheat and soybeans. This reflects the government’s broader vision of catalyzing meaningful agricultural transformation. By prioritizing innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices, Zambia is poised to become a major player in the regional agricultural landscape.
